Elk eat their food in two stages and have an even number of toes on each hoof, like camels, goats and cattle. American and Siberian Elk were, at one time, divided into many subspecies, but still are very similar in DNA and physical features. In California, Oregon, and Washington, west of the Cascade Range, the largest of the American and Siberian Elk can be found. Roosevelt Elk males have been recorded weighing up to 1,300 lbs, and can be found in Alaska. Most newborn elk calves weigh about 35 lbs, and the ones born in the spring are spotted at birth, unlike the ones born in other seasons, but they lose all their spots by adulthood.
