The idea of bungee jumping came from the ancient ritual Gkol performed in the Pentecost Island in the Pacific Archipelago of Vanuatu. It was later transformed into a ritual for proving manhood and to provide rich yam harvest for the inhabitants.
Bungee jumping started on April 1st, 1979 (April Fools Day) with a group of Oxford University students jumped from the Clifton Suspension Bridge, which was 245 feet above the ground, in England. They were influenced by a movie about vine jumpers and used a nylon braided, rubber shock cord. The first bungee jumpers wore formal attire with long tails that day.
