MAINE OCEAN SCHOOL RAISES $31,000 FOR SCHOOL OPENING
Nearly 50 supporters and directors of the new Maine Ocean School and its foundation gathered at a dinner Friday, Aug. 10 at the Samoset Resort and raised an estimated $31,000 toward the school's opening on September 4. The Maine Ocean School is a public magnet high school for marine science, technology, transportation and engineering that provides a "hands-on, minds-on" education on the water, in the lab and in the classroom, according to the school's literature. The school is a partnership with the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport.

SOURCES OF INSPIRATION AT PENOBSCOT MARINE
Penobscot Marine Museum offers another Sources of Inspiration presentation Thursday, Aug. 23, at 5:30 p.m. Al Ross, model maker from BlueJacket Shipcrafters in Searsport, will discuss which designs inspire him the most and why. The presentation will take place at Penobscot Marine Museum's Visitors Center, 2 Church St. The cost is $8, $5 for museum members.

TEEN DIES AFTER BIKE, CAR COLLIDE ON ROUTE 1
A 15-year-old girl has died two days after she was hit by a car while riding her bike on Route 1. Laila Al-Matrouk of Belfast had been on life support before her death, according to a Facebook post by her older sister, who called Laila "beautiful, smart, strong willed, outspoken, funny and charismatic." Witnesses told police the bicyclist appeared to have been attempting to make a left turn out of her driveway into Searsport Avenue Aug. 5 when she was struck by a passing vehicle.

ROUTE 1 BIKE, CAR COLLISION LEAVES TEEN IN CRITICAL CONDITION
A 15-year-old girl was in critical condition Sunday night after she allegedly rode her bike into Route 1 and was hit by a car. Belfast Police responded at about 2:30 p.m. Aug. 5 to a report of a "serious accident" on Route 1 near the Searsport town line, Chief Mike McFadden said.
